BIOGRAPHY - CHRIS BIVINS
Christopher Bivins has been an admirer of Hip-Hop Dance Styles since his earlier days as a child growing up in West Palm Beach Fl,. He was very much influenced by Michael Jackson, Mc Hammer, and the like in the early 90’s when hip-Hop Dance Styles became more mainstream. Chris was eager to entertain relatives, showcasing Hip-Hop dance moves from music videos he had seen. His mother would soon realize his potential, and at the age of nine she enrolled chris in Tap at a private dance studio in north Palm Beach. Chris caught on quickly learning basic tap sequences and patterns ultimately allowing him a spot in a dance performance at Suncoast high school. Due to parents financial woes, the training only lasted for a semester. That would be the only formal training Chris would receive in regards to Hip-Hop dance styles which incorporates Tap. His appreciation and knowledge of Hip-Hop Dance Styles would further grow when he began researching various styles consisting of popping, locking, and breaking in his middle and high school years. He began studying Hip-Hop dance moves originating from such dancers as Cab Calloway, The Nicholas Brothers, James Brown, Don Cambell, Mr. Wiggles, Electric Boogaloos, and applied the technique within his dance. Later on, such research would be utilized when Chris and two other members from Palm Beach Community college formed a Hip-Hop dance trio and performed at the 2006 Talent Show held at the Duncan Theatre. The Trio had won 3rd place with a cash prize of 500.00. Amidst years of self taught Hip-Hop dance, he continues develop as a dancer touching bases with the three main dance styles; popping, locking, and breaking. What is Hip-Hop Dance Styles? Hip-Hop Dance Styles is a combination of gymnastics, African dance/Capoeira, and martial arts. Breaking/B-Boy (Break Boy or Girl) is a combination of Top Rock and Uprock which are mainly seen in standing positions whereas the six-step, freeze, and flare are mainly groundwork. Popping is a dance style with the intent of simulating a shock or a “pop”effect when the popper is dancing to a particular rhythm which is mainly seen in standing positions. Locking is a dance style with the intent of simulating a “lock” of the arms and various wrist rolls and funk moves.
